Dental Therapist / Hygienist
Dental Therapists have been working in general practice since 2002. They are able to complete all procedures a hygienist provides. In addition they are able to provide fillings on primary and permanent teeth. For primary teeth they can provide pulp treatment and extractions if necessary. All such treatment is prescribed by the dentist at the examination appointment.
Dental Hygienists are trained to play an important role in dental health, and gum health in particular. Their main role is to professionally clean the teeth of patients, which most people know as ‘scale & polishing’. This is done to remove the deposits that build up on the teeth, plaque and tartar. Plaque bacteria are responsible for causing gum disease, so one of the most important parts of the hygienist’s job is to teach patients the most effective ways to remove the plaque that builds up on a daily basis.
